Lieutenant General James Maurice “Pasha” Frost worked as an engineer at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, where fellow Aberdonian Sir John Anderson, the Royal Arsenal’s first Chief Mechanical Engineer, offered him a position leading to Artillery Adviser to the Sultan of Turkey which he readily accepted. Frost moved to Constantinople (now Istanbul) where after a successful career in the Ottoman Arsenal, he was appointed Brigadier-General in the Imperial Ottoman Artillery, with the rank of Pasha, and Superintendent of the Ottoman Laboratory Department, and became known as“Frost Pasha”.
